More Than a Job: Life, Connection, and Flexibility in CSAC’s Residential Homes

More Than a Job: Life, Connection, and Flexibility in CSAC’s Residential Homes
By Counseling Service of Addison County (CSAC)

For Peggy, working in one of CSAC’s residential homes isn’t just a job—it’s a relationship, a rhythm, and a way of life.

“I eat dinner with the residents like we’re family,” she says. “Because we are a kind of family.”

Peggy joined CSAC’s Developmental Services program, Community Associates, looking for meaningful work and a schedule that gave her time for what matters most—her daughters, her grandchildren, and the freedom to support them in the ways only a mom and grandmother can.

She had experience as a private caregiver and had worked in a local retirement community, but she was looking for something that offered more flexibility and more connection. At CSAC, she found both.

“I can organize my schedule so that I’m doing work I care about and still have time to help my family,” she says. “I watch my granddaughter two days a week. I can pick up my grandkids when daycares close early. And I can still run to Costco if I need to!”

What’s the work like?

A typical day starts early: helping residents get ready, preparing breakfast, and making a plan for the day. Residents are active and engaged—they love getting out into the community, going on outings, shopping, or trying something new.

Throughout the day, Peggy supports with personal care, household routines like laundry and cleaning, and—importantly—helps teach the skills people need to do things more independently. She sees herself not only as a caregiver, but as a coach.

“We’re helping people grow in confidence and skills,” she says. “It’s really rewarding.”

Then comes dinner—which is a highlight. Peggy loves to cook, and her meals are homemade, healthy, and beloved by residents. “They tell me they miss my cooking when I’m away,” she says with a laugh. “We eat together. It’s a real community.”

Some shifts include overnight hours—but with a sleeping night and a monitor alert in place, Peggy says the nights are quiet. “I’m often in bed by 8,” she says. “It’s peaceful.”

A job that fits real life

Peggy’s schedule works for her. She works a mix of day and evening shifts, with flexibility to pick up overtime when she wants to, or to step back when she needs more family time. It’s a balance that works—and one that CSAC actively supports.

“We offer full-time, part-time, and substitute positions,” says the team at Community Associates. “You can build a schedule that works for your life. Whether you’re raising kids, caring for a family member, or just want a flexible role with a strong team—you can find that here.”

Why residential work?

In CSAC’s homes, staff build deep relationships with residents and their families. You get to be part of the everyday—celebrating birthdays, going to doctor’s appointments, laughing over dinner, and decorating for the holidays. It’s real life, with all its ups and downs, and it’s deeply human work.

Peggy recalls one young resident who had never had a real birthday celebration before coming to the home. “We threw him a party and he told us it was the best birthday he’d ever had. That meant everything to us.”

From family-style dinners to outings like mini golf or visits to a sugarhouse, Peggy says, “We have a lot of fun. We’re a close-knit group who care about one another. The residents bring a lot to my life—as much as I bring to theirs.”
